The Steakhouse
November 23rd, 2006We have set us the goal to review every restaurant in Docklands, Melbourne. This of course necessitates visiting them all. Yesterday we made a start with The Steakhouse.
The Steakhouse is pleasantly located at NewQuay, and we got a nice table right at the window overlooking the harbour. The restaurant was not too full yet but filled up before we’d quite finished our first drinks. The decor is slightly informal and we felt very comfortable there. The staff immediately took a drinks order, and were very attentive throughout the meal without being intrusive.
Having seen the dessert menu we decided to skip the starter in favour of a possible dessert later. We both chose steaks (naturally, it being a steakhouse). I went for quality over quantity and chose an eye fillet, while the Protein Hound decided on a T-Bone. To go with that we ordered a side of chips, and a glass of red wine each. Australian, of course.
The meal took quite some time to arrive but was well worth the wait. We were not bored as a TV screen shows what’s cooking on the grill at any time, and the view over the harbour was fantastic. When our meals did turn up they were a delight to look at, the steaks balanced on top of a potato gratin (maybe the chips weren’t strictly speaking necessary).
There are several sauces to choose from, all of which sounded delicious. I’d gone for a red wine sauce which was rich, smooth and full of flavour. The Chilli Hound decided on the spicy chilli sauce, which turned out delectable and, to his delight, quite spicy as well.
The steak arrived cooked exactly as we had specified (’medium’ and ‘medium rare’ respectively), and was juicy and flavoursome. Although the potato gratin was also excellent, the chips eclipsed them slightly, being crunchy on the outside and beautifully soft on the inside.
Encouraged thus we decided to go for pudding as well. Being a Chocoholic, for me the dessert menu stopped when I reached chocolate pudding with hot chocolate sauce and vanilla ice-cream. It was heavenly. The chocolate and passionfruit mousse was also excellent but in my opinion no match.
Rounding the meal off with coffees was a very pleasant way to finish a most agreeable evening.
This is a picture of a peccary.
